Gentle Support for Life’s Earliest Days

As parents, we naturally want to do everything we can to support our baby’s comfort and development. If your little one seems unsettled, struggles with feeding, or just doesn’t seem quite at ease in their body, you may have heard of cranial osteopathy. But what exactly is it—and how can it help?

🧠 What Is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle form of manual therapy used by osteopaths to assess and support the health of the body.  Despite the name, it’s not just about the head—it's about the whole body. Birth and the later stages of pregnancy can leave babies with lingering tension in their bodies.  These patterns of tension can sometimes affect how a baby feeds, sleeps, digests, or even how comfortable they are being held.

👶 How Might It Help?

Cranial osteopathy aims to ease areas of tension, helping the body to regulate and settle. Parents often bring their babies to see an osteopath for support with:

  • Feeding difficulties (latching issues, shallow latch)
  • Reflux or excessive wind
  • Irritability or difficulty settling
  • Preference for turning the head to one side (possibly linked to flat head shape)
  • Tension after a difficult or assisted birth (forceps, ventouse, or C-section)

Each session is tailored to your baby and involves gentle touch—often so light it looks like we’re barely doing anything. But through trained hands, osteopaths can feel subtle patterns of strain or imbalance and support the baby’s natural ability to unwind them.

🩺 Is It Safe?

Yes. Osteopaths working with babies undergo specific training in paediatric care and adapt techniques to suit the baby’s needs and development. We always take time to listen to your concerns and explain what we’re doing at every step.Cranial osteopathy is not a replacement for medical care, but it can be a valuable complement—especially in those early weeks when babies are adjusting to life outside the womb.
